climbing in order to soar

bird steps - February 27, 2014pm

After I first created this cartoon, I thought I’d made a mistake…

Why does the bird need to climb, step by step?  After all, it’s a bird, it can fly!

But perhaps the bird doesn’t yet know it can fly.  Maybe it must go up many more steps—maybe all the way to the top—until it finally realizes what it is.  Then it will spread its wings and soar.

royal frog

frog heart - February 11, 2014pm

I’m posting these two cartoons together, because I believe we’re all royalty, potentially…

But until we achieve our crowns, we can still be damn good frogs.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Glorious Tedious Transformation

spiral notebook

cc cover - February 6, 2014pm

When I created this book cover, I thought the message was obvious…

Now, I’m thinking, maybe not…

The flower must be struck by the lightning bolt in order to open up. That’s how it must happen—sometimes.

The flower has a spiral in its stem, because (as I see it), that’s the way we progress: on a spiral.  The spiral is a paradox: moving upward on a spiral, sometimes you’ll be traveling downward, yet you’ll still be going up.
